AMAVASYA MAY 2024: DOS AND DON’TS YOU MUST FOLLOW ON VAISHAKH AMAVASYA

Amavasya May 2024: "No moon" or "new moon," signalling the beginning of a new solar cycle and lunar month, is what the Sanskrit word "Amavasya" means. The darkness of this day represents more than just a lack of light; it also has a deeper spiritual meaning, signifying a time for introspection, rebirth, and self-awareness. Amavasya is a day on which people honour their ancestors and seek their blessings. Devotees visit many sacred sites in addition to conducting hawan and yajna, sacred bathing in the Ganga, pitru puja, and pitru tarapan. Vaishakh Amavasya is being observed on 8th May 2024. 

There are certain dos and don’ts that must be followed on the day of Amavasya to escape misfortune and appease the ancestors. Let us check them out below.  

Amavasya May 2024: Do’s And Don’ts To Follow On Amavasya 

1. It's not ideal to wake up late on Amavasya. Rising early is usually preferable since positivism and divinity are more prevalent then. A person will be clouded by negative energy if they wake up late. Amavasya is a day when the negative energy is stronger, thus it is best to avoid getting up late.

2. You should be careful not to offend the ancestors on Amavasya as it is the ideal day to offer prayers to them. Whether known or unknown, any disdain for them will have unwelcome consequences.

3. Steer clear of alcohol and non-vegetarian meals during Amavasya. Consume only pure, sattvic food. On this day, consuming tamasic food items might bring bad luck. 

4. On this day, don't schedule any significant events like marriage, housewarming, naam karan sanskar, or baby showers. 

5. Amavasya thithis are not suitable for holding any auspicious rites, with the exception of Kartik Amavasya (the day of Diwali).  

6. It is not ideal to purchase food grains, such as rice and wheat flour, on Amavasya as it brings negativity. 

7. According to Hindu texts, it is forbidden to pluck the Tulasi leaves off the plant during Amavasya.

8. Married couples must refrain from engaging in intimate relationships. Given that Amavasya is a time of ascent for negativity, it is believed that a child born into a union formed on this day may have birth defects.

9. People must perform shradh ceremony and pitru tarpan on Amavasya to seek the blessings of their ancestors and pray for their satisfaction. 

10. Additionally, it is highly advantageous to take bath in sacred water bodies during Amavasya tithi.
